How to getElementByClass in Javascript - The Code

getElementByClass - How to, sample code.

A colleague of mine at work, Patrick Alcisto, asked me how a getElementByClass is done in JavaScript since getElementByID exists in JavaScript but getElementbyClass does not exist. And I have been using a standard script ever since 2004 that I just always have handy in my previous work, but sometimes, looking and remembering which websites I applied it on takes some time. So just to make it easy for me find the code when I need it, might as well post it on my blog so it is easy to find. Check the sample getElementsByClass code below: (more…)

Why Learn Drupal?

Bloged in Software by Benj Arriola Monday November 5, 2007

Why learn Drupal? Tutorials and TrainingI have heard about Drupal as being one of the best CMS’ since early 2006. I remember first hearing it on SEO Rockstars mentioned by Greg Boser as he once said they are “looking into Drupal” and that was more than a year ago already. Then I noticed companies like SEOPosition and Apogee Search are specifically saying they do Drupal stuff and are marketing themselves that way.

And I was still confused on what route to take as I have seen other people with a lot of proficiency in Joomla and still making their websites rank high for SEO purposes like the works of Jun Macarambon and Dennis Agulo.

But I received the task of doing some research at work to compare various CMS’, Drupal emerged as the winner. The research was a long and detailed process, which I do not even want to repeat in this blog post. And after my own research, Drupal was my winner and after I have done my research, I was happy to find other websites starting to come out that reinforces my decision. Here are a few things I found on the net which may want you to choose Drupal also over other CMS’. (more…)

Opening files with the .docx, .xlsx, .pptx filename extension

Bloged in Software by Benj Arriola Friday October 12, 2007

If ever you had trouble opening the following file types:

  • .docx
  • .xlsx
  • .pptx

This simply means you are not yet running Microsoft Office 2007 and is probably still running MS Office 2003 or lower. And isn’t in frustrating knowing that your old Office cannot open these files and you think you have to buy the new Office 2007 package?

Actually you can still open MS Office 2007 files with these file extension in Office 2003 using the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats. If you need a copy, you will need some update packs and simply download the compatibility pack here. No more problems in opening .docx, .xlsx and .pptx anymore. :D

Looking for the GoToMyPC alternative

Bloged in Software, Technojaculate by Al Khalel Le Beau Saturday September 22, 2007

Whenever I meet clients, I sometimes forget some important files in the office and I get frustrated about this because my clients might think that I am not well-prepared for the presentation and that could ruin my chances of getting the project. As we know, first impressions can make or break you. Sometimes, when I have a lot of work to do, I decide to bring some stuff home and it irritates me when I realize that I forgot to bring other important files.

Through the widespread banner ads and pay-per-click ads, GoToMyPC has become popular and I decided to search for an open source alternative for me not to spend money.

I searched for “gotomypc opensource alternative” in Google and the first result was an entry from Wikipedia shown on the screenshot below:

Looking for the GoToMyPC Alternative

As you notice, it indicates an open source alternative:

I checked out the page but I no longer found the opensource alternative in Wikipedia (more…)

Getting the green light

Green Traffic Light
This photo is NOT by

I drove to city hall today in a motorbike and noticed just how much time I spent waiting at red lighted but otherwise empty intersections. I tell you, it sucks that I have to wait so much until the light changes on its own or until a bigger car comes by (for which the red almost instantly goes green). Infuriating! I must’ve wasted about 25% of my trip waiting on empty intersections gnashing my teeth but unable to run the red light because of traffic cameras.

So a little research led me to some very interesting little known hacks that will help me get the green light everytime! You want to save gas and truckloads of time? Do yourself a favor and read on. (more…)

3 Ways on How to Open a Master Combination Lock

Bloged in Devices, Technojaculate by Al Khalel Le Beau Tuesday September 18, 2007

If you have a master combination lock which you can’t unlock because you forgot the combination, here are three interesting videos that can help you on how to crack a master combination lock. In order for you to unlock a master combination lock, it will take around 64,000 possible combinations using the trial and error method and that will take approximately 22 days to get the job done. The first two videos that I will show you can guide you on how to hack a master combination lock in approximately 30 minutes by narrowing it down to only 100 possible combinations. The third video on the other hand can provide you with the fastest way to open a master combination lock in just a few minutes.

This first video shows an algorithmic way of opening the lock. This process involves three phases. First phase involves getting the 3rd number of the combination while second and third phases involve getting the first and second numbers of the combination respectively. Now check below the second video. (more…)

Google Maps Reaches Out to Your Area

Bloged in Webgasm by Al Khalel Le Beau Tuesday September 18, 2007

Google Maps now has a wider coverage for Asian and Latin American countries. It only used to have vector map data in some countries like the United States, Europe and other countries which have a centralized mapping system. For some countries like the Philippines, map users rely heavily on the information contributed and shared by individuals on keyhole.com or pagenation.com.
Here is a map of Manila, Philippines.

IrfanView LogoIrfanView is one of the Top 10 Freeware Software Nobody Knows About - But Should, and how!  This little app is quite the useful tool for basic image manipulation, and conversion, despite it’s speed and ease of use.

Who can do a LASIK operation, an Optician, Optometrist or Ophthalmologist?

Bloged in The Blog by Al Khalel Le Beau Thursday September 13, 2007

Who can do a LASIK operationI have a friend who has long been suffering from myopia asked me to help him find the right specialist where he can undergo LASIK eye surgery. He said that his being near-sighted has always been a burden to him and lately, he almost had a serious accident due to it. There was a time at night when he crossed the street all by himself and unknowingly, a speeding car with the headlights off came rushing towards him. Luckily, the driver was fast enough to hit the brakes and he was not ran over by the car.

He was also quite confused on what specific specialist to look for. He asked several people on where he can get LASIK treatment but these people gave him different answers. Some told him to go to an Optician. Others advised him to go to an Optometrist and lastly, some suggested that he check out an Opthalmologist. This is rather a serious issue because for him to get the right treatment, he would need to go to the right specialist. I explained to him that what an Optician does is to simply help patients find the right frame and make some adjustments if necessary to make the frames fit comfortably. An Optometrist on the other hand should be a licensed Doctor of Optometry who passed the state boeard exam and its primary responsibility is to perform annual examinations to patients to test for any visual problems like glaucoma, color perception, depth and the ability to focus and coordinate the eyes. Moreover, an Opthalmologist is the only eye specialist (more…)

Almost Complete MS Excel Keyboard Shortcuts

As I just came in work, I receive an email from Michael Weisfeld with an attached file of Microsoft Excel Keyboard Shortcuts from BNET. And in his email he asks…

Check this out… Benj are there any not on there :)

So here I go and I check it out. And I can say this spreadsheet is really like almost complete. A lot of things listed on it I am not even aware of. So I really appreciated the almost complete MS Excel keyboard shortcut cheat sheet. But as I looked through it, although the list is quite impressive, there were still a lot of keyboard shortcuts I personally do on Microsoft Excel that were not there. (more…)
